CMAC Receives Over US $6 Million for Cluster Munition Remnants and Landmine Clearance

PHNOM PENH: The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) will receive US $6,444,808 from the U.S and Norwegian governments for the clearance of cluster munitions remnants and landmines in Cambodia.

The Director General of CMAC, Heng Ratana, and the Resident Representative of the Norwegian People Aid (NPA), Mr. Rune Dale Andresen, signed the Cooperation Agreements at CMAC’s Phnom Penh Headquarters on Wednesday, 9 March.

According to Heng Ratana, US $6,355,720 of the total amount is allocated for a Cluster Munitions Remnant Survey and Clearance in Eastern Cambodia, funded by the U.S. Government, and the remaining, US $89,077 is allocated for two short-term projects: the Landmine Survey & Clearance on the Cambodia-Thailand Border project, and the Landmine Free Provinces in Southern part of Cambodia project, funded by the Government of Norway.

The support from the U.S. will enable CMAC to provide humanitarian services with around 200 demining experts to be deployed in the provinces of Kampong Cham, Thbong Khmum, Kratie, Stung Treng, Svay Rieng, Prey Veng, Mondulkiri and Rattanakiri for cluster munitions remnant survey and clearance. With a duration of 45 months, from 1 March to 30 November 2022, the CMAC expects to clear a targeted land area of 13,200 hectares of cluster munitions. For their part, the demining clearance projects will assist CMAC to realize its strategic plans to support the Royal Government of Cambodia to achieve the country's commitment to the AP Man Bine Convention by 2025.

The CMAC and NPA have a long history of cooperation since 1992, which has included the removal of the threat of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW), the return of hope, and the rebuilding of a prosperous future for Cambodians.

“CMAC wishes to profoundly thank the Governments and people of America and Norway for their continued commitment and strong support to mine action. Both financial and in-kind contributions have extensively enabled CMAC to have stronger and more effective operations to fight against the hidden killers, and to respond to the needs of millions of people affected by landmines and ERW, as well as to support socio-economic development of Cambodia,” said Heng Ratana.
